1 Pacific SLSC Competition/Team Selection Policy U8-U10s
Purpose: Pacific Surf Life Saving Club encourages all members to participate in carnivals and represent Pacific SLSC. There are several carnivals our youngest members can attend, with some of these teams carnivals exclusively. This selection policy outlines our approach to team selection with the goal of ensuring our youngest members are introduced to surf sports carnivals and competitions in a safe and enjoyable way.
Scope: The policy applies to u8 – u10s competing at carnivals where team or event team nominations are required.
Definitions:
- Team refers to the entire Pacific SLSC team (all age groups) selected to participate in the carnival.
- Event Team refers to a selected team for a team event (e.g. beach sprint, wade, etc.).
Selection for Teams:
Selection for teams and event teams will be made by the Age Managers and Team Manager (collectively the Selection Committee). Age Managers are best placed to know the skills and personalities of the children wishing to participate and thus are integral to this age group. The Selection parties may seek the input from the Surf Sports Officer as required.
To attend a carnival the nipper must:
- Be financial at Pacific SLSC in the current season
- Have completed their required Awards for their age group
- Regularly attend Nippers to practice the skills that will be required at carnivals
Selection Process
- Prior to a Carnival, the Club will publish the event and call for team/event nominations.
- The Age Managers will canvas members at Sunday Nippers and help identify those that may wish to participate.
- The Age Managers will advise the Surf Sports Officer of interest and ensure parents complete an entry nomination form (where required).
- For team carnivals, the Age Managers will collect names of interested members.
- The Selection Committee has total discretion in the selection of competitors for event team.
- The Selection Committee may change the selection of any team or event team at their discretion, should it be deemed necessary due to extenuating circumstances, i.e., illness, injury, child welfare, or other.
Appeals Process
- Because these carnivals are aimed at supporting our youngest members grown in confidence and have fun, if a parent/caregiver wishes to discuss a team selection they should first engage in a respectful manner with their Age Manager to understand the thought process behind the selection.
- If they are still not happy after this discussion, they may speak with the u8-10 Team Manager.
Removal From a Team/Event Team
A competitor may be removed from a team if they or their parent:
- Breach or fail to observe this policy or other SLSA and Pacific SLSC policies
- Breach or fail to observe the Pacific SLSC Members Code of Conduct

2 Pacific SLSC Competition/Team Selection Policy U11 – U19s
Purpose: Pacific Surf Life Saving Club encourages all members to participate in carnivals and represent Pacific SLSC. For certain carnivals and championships there is a requirement to select a team and/or specific ‘event teams’. This selection policy outlines our approach to team selection with the goal of ensuring we have our best possible teams representing Pacific SLSC at all carnival and championship events.
Scope: The policy applies to u11 – u19s competing at carnivals where team or event team nominations are required.
Definitions:
- Team refers to the entire Pacific SLSC team (all age groups) selected to participate in the carnival.
- Event Team refers to a selected team for a team event (e.g. board rescue, sprint relay, etc.).
- Selection Committee: A selection committee oversees all selections. Selectors are appointed as per the direction of the Pacific SLSC constitution and shall consist of the Club Head Coach, Surf Sports Officer and Team Manager.
Eligibility for Selection:
To be considered for selection in a Pacific SLSC team or event team, competitors must:
- Be financial and have competition rights assigned to Pacific SLSC in the current season
- Have completed their required Education Award and Patrol obligations if in the following ages:
- u14 – SRC
- u15, u17, u19 – Bronze Medallion
- u17, u19 – minimum 25 patrol hours in the competition season
- Have obtained competition level of proficiency
Selection Criteria:
The selectors will consider:
- Carnival participation and results during the current season, including Club Championships
- Level of participation and contribution to the Club’s training program as evidenced by attendance records and feedback from the Coach and Team Manager
- Discussion with Age Managers about the athlete’s attitude and general contribution to the Club’s Sunday Nippers program
- Injury or condition which will likely impair the competitor’s performance
- Any other factors considered relevant in the circumstances
No selection criteria shall be weighted more or less significantly.
Where possible, priority is given to individuals competing in their correct age group, especially in the U11-U15’s. Where an age group has insufficient competitors to constitute a team, members from age groups below may be considered. Making up a team in a higher age group shall not jeopardize a participant’s ability to compete in their correct age events (individual or team).
Selection Process
- The selectors have total discretion in the selection of competitors in accordance with the Selection Criteria.
- The decision of the Selection Committee shall be final.
- The Selection Committee may change the selection of any team or event team at their discretion, should it be deemed necessary due to extenuating circumstances, i.e., illness or injury or other.
Conflicts of Interest
Having a child being considered for a team or event team shall not be sufficient grounds for any of the Selection Committee to not participate. The three-person membership of the Committee ensures the integrity of the process. In the event of a significant conflict of interest the Club President will participate in the discussion and selection.
Notification of Team Selection
All competitors will be notified of team and event team selections as soon as possible through a Team Meeting and notification on the Member’s room notice board. Feedback will also be provided to individual athletes in circumstances where the selection outcome involved a choice between several closely ranked competitors.
Appeals Process
Any athlete who may feel aggrieved about their non selection after having discussions with the Coach, should approach the Club’s Surf Sports Officer and outline the basis of their concerns, noting that appeals can only be pursued on procedural grounds, and there is no right of review into the merits of the selection itself
Team Uniform Requirements
When selected on a team it is the expectation of the Club that you will wear Pacific SLSC’s noddy, swimwear and uniform with respect.
When attending medal presentations, the Club noddy and swimwear must be always worn.
Removal From a Team/Event Team
A competitor may be removed from a team if they or their parent:
- Breach or fail to observe this policy or other SLSA and Pacific SLSC policies
- Breach or fail to observe the Pacific SLSC Members Code of Conduct
